Tell us a bit about yourself – what was your PhD about and where did you study?

Anthropology of Architecture, UCL. Specifically how people living in prefabricated mass housing in the former socialist bloc tried to create individualised spaces that reflect who they are.

What do you do now? What did you decide to do next after gaining your PhD?

I am a video journalist working with Mashable. I worked throughout writing my PhD.

Has having a PhD helped in developing your career? If yes, what has been the biggest impact? If no, why do you think that is?

No — in fact, having a PhD has sometimes been seen as a disadvantage: either as being overqualified or too academic.

What’s one piece of advice that you’d offer prospective students considering a PhD?

Never throw all your eggs in one basket. Always have other options in case academia is not what you want to do in 10 years time.

And what one thing would you suggest that new PhD graduates should do next?

Make connections with people outside academia.

Lastly, what’s your favourite memory from your time as a PhD student?

Teaching first years students philosophy.
