This project offers a unique opportunity to utilize advanced flow measurement techniques in order to understand the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics of tip leakage flow. You will join the highly motivated researchers in the Acoustics group at the Institute of sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), which is recognised as one of the world’s leading centres for the investigation of sound and vibration phenomena.
Despite more than fifty years of research into fan noise, the mechanism and understanding of the noise generated at the blade tip is still poorly understood. Ducted fans are important in modern jet engines, UAV’s and drones. This lack of understanding is mainly because there are likely to be a number of different source mechanisms and also because the unsteady flow, and hence the sources of noise, are confined to the very small regions around the blade tip. This predominantly experimental project is aimed at a fundamental understanding and characterisation of the noise generated at the tip of a ducted fan.
Applications are invited from prospective UK/EU candidates with an excellent degree (or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University) in a relevant mathematics, science or engineering subject. Strong mathematical skills will be an advantage.
If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr. Chaitanya Paruchuri, Acoustic Research Group, Email: [email protected], Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 9458.
Funding includes full tuition fees for EU/UK students plus for UK students, an enhanced stipend of £15,285 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.
Candidates require a very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).
Applications should be received no later than 31 August 2020 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.
Applications should be made online, please select the academic session 2020-21 “PhD Eng & Env (Full time)” as the programme. Please enter Chaitanya Paruchuri under the proposed supervisor.
Applications should include:
- Curriculum Vitae
- Two reference letters
- Degree Transcripts to date
