Biomechanics and Mechanobiology of Fetal/Embryonic Heart Development (Project 1)

Project Description

The Cardiovascular Biomechanics and Ultrasound Laboratory, led by Dr. Choon Hwai Yap, is moving to Imperial College in July 2020, and is looking for multiple talented and highly-motivated PhD students, to research on embryonic and fetal cardiovascular biomechanics and mechanobiology. Candidate with strong background in biomechanics and programming, or with developmental biology, and who are interested in cross-disciplinary work and interested to join our multi-disciplinary collaboration network, are especially welcome.

Project 1 – Understanding the Mechanobiology Origins of Congenital Heart Diseases

Past investigations have pointed to abnormal cardiac deformational mechanics and flow forces to play a role in causing congenitally malformed hearts. We strive to understand the mechanisms by which this happens in a multidisciplinary team, via studies of biomechanics and biological responses to mechanical stimuli in small animal embryos and disease models. We will use advanced and novel imaging, image processing, and biomechanics simulation tools to understand embryonic heart biomechanics, and gene sequencing, histology and biological perturbation approaches to understand the associated mechanobiology.

Funding Information

The successful candidate will complete a PhD in Bioengineering Doctoral Training Programme, and is covered by a full scholarship providing fees and a stipend. The position can start any time from July 2020, and is open until filled.
