PhD Studentship: Quantifying Ecosystem Service Provision of Kelp Farming for Nutrient Removal and Coastal Protection

Deadline: 18 November 2026
Funded

Project Description

Overview

Kelp farming is increasing due to its low intensity, lack of competition for space and the perceived health-benefits. In addition to the direct benefits of kelp farming, it also provides a wealth of additional ecosystem services e.g. nutrient cycling, coastal protection, yet these services are poorly quantified. Working with industry partners (e.g. Cornish Seaweed Company) this PhD will:

  • 1) Collate existing evidence on kelp ecosystem service provision
  • 2) Determine the wave attenuation potential of farmed kelp
  • 3) Quantify the role of kelp in the uptake and removal of nutrients
  • 4) Model kelp ecosystem services through space and time.
